How we decide what a job actually is

The most common way a plumbing bill gets out of control is that the wrong job was diagnosed at the start. A weak shower gets treated as a pipe problem when it is a pump duty problem. A damp wall gets opened where the water arrived rather than where it escaped. A soakaway gets emptied when the ground around it has simply stopped accepting water.

So the first thing we do on every call, regardless of service, is establish which of these we are actually dealing with:

• A supply problem, water is not arriving with enough rate or pressure. Lives in the borehole, tank, pump, vessel and valves.
• A containment problem, water is arriving but escaping. Lives in pipework, joints, fittings and seals.
• A disposal problem, water is arriving and leaving the fixture but not getting away. Lives in falls, branches, chambers and the soakaway.
• An appliance problem, the fixture or heater itself.

These four present with overlapping symptoms and have completely different costs. Sorting them takes testing, not guessing, and it is the reason we quote after diagnosis rather than before it.
